DaimlerChrysler creates an additional 800 new jobs at the Rastatt Plant

  • Largest personnel increase in the German automotive industry

  • Professor Jürgen Hubbert: “A commitment to Germany“

DaimlerChrysler AG is going ahead with yet another significant increase in the number of jobs at the Rastatt plant in the coming months. In addition to the already announced creation of 1,000 new jobs in connection with the launch of the new A-Class, 800 new jobs are going to be created by spring 2005. The reason for the additional increase is the excellent market outlook for Mercedes-Benz models coming out of Rastatt.

The 1,800 new jobs created since the beginning of 2004 will bring the headcount of the plant, which is based in the southwest German region of Baden, up to 6,500 employees. For Rastatt this signifies a personnel increase of nearly 40 % within an 18 month period.

According to Professor Jürgen Hubbert, DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management member responsible for Mercedes Car Group, “the creation of additional new jobs in Rastatt is not only proof of the attractiveness of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. This significant personnel increase also illustrates our commitment to Germany as a production base”.

Hubbert noted that no other automaker is currently creating as many new jobs in Germany.

Günther Fleig, DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management member responsible for Human Resources stated that “with the reform package deal for ‘securing the future 2012’ negotiated with the Central Works Council and the IG Metall union in July, we have also taken an important step toward assuring the competitiveness of our Rastatt plant. The agreement has made the plant even more flexible and is contributing to the creation of new jobs“.

The Baden location is mainly looking to hire production staff for the assembly, body construction and logistics areas. Automotive electricians, mechatronics specialists and painting technicians are just a few of the available positions now advertised by the automaker. However, the plant is also hiring workers for non-production related positions.

In addition to the creation of new jobs in the DaimlerChrysler plant, the supplier community will also profit from the sales success of the new Mercedes-Benz models. The production of the A-Class in the plant’s industrial park is currently responsible for an additional 600 jobs at the suppliers, which intend to double their headcount by the spring of next year. Overall, DaimlerChrysler will therefore contribute to the creation of 2,400 new jobs in Rastatt.

DaimlerChrysler has invested around € 900 million in the plant expansion and related expansion measures for the industrial park. As a result, the production capacity for vehicles out of Rastatt will increase by almost 50 %.
